Sciatica pain is occurred by an injury, irritation, inflammation, pinching, and compression of a nerve in the lower back area. Sciatica pain is sharp, shooting, radiating pain starts from lower back region and runs down the back of the thigh, buttocks calf.
Sciatica leads to mild to severe pain anywhere along the path of the sciatic nerve. That is anywhere from the lower back.
Sciatica causes muscle weakness in leg and foot, which leads to numbness, tingling, pins and needles sensation in leg foot and toes. Pain is sharp shooting or burning and stabbing in nature.
Sciatica pain is radiating in nature pain get worse after prolong sitting, standing coughing, sneezing also make the pain worse.
Major cause of Sciatica is:-
- Herniated Disc:-
Herniated disc compress one or more spinal nerve root that form the sciatic nerve. It causes sciatica in two ways:-
- Direct Compression
- Chemical Inflammation
Herniated disc may compress the sciatic nerve on one side causing symptoms in one leg or disc may bulge and herniated from both sides causing symptoms in both legs.
- Degeneration:-
Degeneration of tissue in lumbar spine can compress and irritate the sciatic nerve degeneration of the facet joints can also cause the synovial tissue in the joint capsule to inflame and increase in bulk. Degeneration of vertebral bone may cause abnormal bone growths.
- Lumbar spine stenosis:-
Spinal stenosis is narrowing of spaces in your spine. Less space in spine reduce the amount of space available for spinal cord and nerves .A tightened space can cause the spinal cord or nerves to become irritated, compressed or pinched which leads to sciatica. Stenosis usually develops over time common in older age group.
- Spondylolisthesis:-
Spondylolisthesis is a condition in which vertebra slip forward, backward or over an adjacent bone.Slipped lumbar vertebra that protrudes into the spinal canal and pinches the spinal cord may cause sciatica.
